Every Life Counts! Really? I think it is easy for us to hear that and nod our heads in agreement without really ever allowing it to fully set in as to what it means. Maybe its because our culture has taught us to have a self consumeristic mindset and so when we see that statement we just think yes, "My life does count!" Or perhaps we roll our eyes at that statement thinking, "Yeah, yeah, 6 billion people on this planet and God loves them all, big deal." But it is a big deal! Because God loves them all that means we are called to as well; we are called to allow God to channel His love through us. You and I will never lock eyes with someone, who doesn't have intrinsic significance and eternal worth from our God! So when the news footage comes on showing the devastation in Haiti watch it from that perspective. Don't flip over to American Idol or wish another news story would break, instead allow your heart to break as you see those images of suffering, of mourning, of loss, and remember that God's heart beats for those people, that His word teaches us that He may never be more near to us then in times of complete brokenness, and pray for your brothers and sisters down there. Psalm 51:17 (MSG) says Heart-shattered lives ready for love don't for a moment escape God's notice. When you see those images is there a better term than "Heart-Shattered?" Haiti, more than ever is ready for and in desperate need of love. God's eye is on them, pray that God would prompt you as an individual and our church as His Bride to respond in a way that would help meet their needs in a tangible way and through it they would feel His love!
Pray also that God would bring good from this tragedy. 7 years ago next month I was in Port au Prince, I was taken back by the immense poverty and the lack of any infrastructure whatsoever. Pray that God would use this horrible tragedy to be able to make the hearts of the wealthy and powerful nations sensitive to the need in Haiti and that they would have a new willingness to step up and help this country get back on their feet in ways that previously they never dreamed possible. Remember through it all, that God loves the people of Haiti; their lives count!
This Sunday we are going to open our service with a special time of prayer for the country and we are working as a leadership to see how we can be involved in helping in a tangible way.
